A vacation = happiness, right?
Well.. it depends, if it's properly planned trip then yes.
The journal of Applied Research in Quality of Life published a study where researchers in the Netherlands found most people were not happier after a vacation. Approximately 1,500 adults were questioned about their happiness before and after travel, and for the average vacation, people reported no change in happiness.
According to the research:
There is no post-trip happiness benefit for travelers who said the vacation was “neutral” or stressful. Surprisingly, even those travelers who described the trip as “relaxing” showed no additional jump in happiness after the trip. “They were no happier than people who had not been on holiday,” said the lead author, Jeroen Nawijn, tourism research lecturer at Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.
Most of the happiness gleaned from vacation depends on the stress level of it. The less the stress, the more likely you will experience a positive benefit from the time off.
In additional research on the topic by Shawn Anchor, author of The Happiness Advantage, “Poorly planned and stressful vacations eliminate the positive benefit of time away.”.
